Biography
Jérôme Poirier was born on September 8, 1956 in Montreal. His father worked as a goldsmith and his mother, a painter/sculptor trained at the Montreal School of Fine Arts as well as with the painter Paul-Émile Borduas; she passed on her passion for the arts to his son. Jérôme Poirier draws, sculpts and paints since his childhood. When he was young, he exchanged his studies to work more in his studio and to travel. He made a living by teaching sculp- ture and attending the Montreal and Toronto Craft Shows, where he won several awards for excellence in production and presentation. In 1983, he became interested in archi- tecture and decorative art. His audacity and imagination influenced him to create unusual sceneries, sometimes in uncommon places, will get him many contracts in Quebec and Ontario. After ten years of diligent work in his company and six years teaching sculpture at the School of Furniture and Woodwork of Montreal, he interrupts this commitment
to devote himself more to the creation in sculpture and painting. Together with choreographer Anne-Marie Giroux, they work to create and conceptualize in different ways a sculptural language focused on the interaction between body, movement and material. Parallel to this journey, he continues his approach in painting and scenic sculpture. His skills in this area have allowed him to collaborate on numerous projects for film, circus, museums and others in Canada and Asia.
Since 2003, Jérôme Poirier has spent a lot of time researching and using his knowledge and experience in painting and scenic sculpture in his personal production. He produces and exhibits several works in numerous galleries in Canada and the United States.
