BIOGRAPHY:
Holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and another in Graphic Design, Serge Dery worked as an Art Director for magazines for over ten years before joining CBC/Radio-Canada as a graphic designer. There, he was responsible for graphics and animation for the RDI news network, working as both a concept designer and 3D animator.
Throughout his career in graphic design, he received several national and international awards recognizing the quality and originality of his work.
Since over a decade, Serge decided to devote himself entirely to his true passion: painting.
His artistic practice is, above all, an exploration — a search for his authentic identity as an artist, his way of thinking, and the subjects that deeply move him. Passionate about portraiture, he sees the human face as a mirror of inner emotion and the human condition.
Deeply inspired by nature, Serge seeks to portray humanity as a fragile species evolving within an increasingly precarious environment.
His recent works reflect an exploration of three-dimensionality, often incorporating butterflies as metaphors for the fragility of life. In his paintings, butterflies symbolize lightness, transformation, death, and rebirth.
Serge is also inspired by famous classical paintings, which he reinterprets through a contemporary lens — a dialogue with the Old Masters and a personal quest for continuity between past and present.
In constant search of a balance between beauty and chaos, he combines realism with abstract expressionism. Working in oil, he builds layers of vibrant colors over deep backgrounds with spontaneous gestures, striving to preserve the freshness and energy of his initial sketches.
