Jacques Pilon

BIOGRAPHY:

Jacques Pilon is a Canadian contemporary painter whose work explores the dynamic relationship between form, colour, movement, and spatial composition. With a distinguished creative career spanning more than three decades in art direction, graphic design, and visual communications, Pilon brings a refined sense of structure, balance, and visual rhythm to his painting practice.

A graduate of the Ontario College of Art & Design University (OCADU), Pilon initially pursued illustration before discovering a stronger affinity for graphic design and visual composition. While building an accomplished career as an award-winning art director and creative director, he continued to paint throughout his life, developing a distinctive visual language rooted in abstraction, gesture, and emotional resonance.

After more than 30 years in the design industry, Pilon transitioned fully into fine art, dedicating himself to the development of a mature and cohesive body of work. His paintings were quickly embraced by galleries and collectors, leading to over 14 years of gallery representation and continued exhibition activity in Québec and Ontario.

Pilon’s work reflects the sensibility of a seasoned visual communicator. His compositions balance intuition and control, combining layered textures, expressive mark-making, and sophisticated colour relationships to create paintings that are both contemplative and energetic. Influenced by the principles of design yet driven by emotion and spontaneity, his work invites viewers into an immersive visual experience that evolves with each encounter.

In addition to his fine art career, Pilon has held senior creative positions including Creative Director of Canadian Home Publishers and Art Director of Canadian House & Home magazine. His extensive client roster includes major Canadian corporations, publishers, and cultural institutions. His work in art direction has received multiple National Magazine Award honours, including Gold and Silver awards, as well as a nomination for International Architecture & Design magazine.

Pilon has also taught typography and visual communication at St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto.
