QUEEN-OBJECT

  Assembled out of a full range of essential superficial beauty tools -a jumble of scattered elements of which the objectified woman is a victim and prisoner, such as Barbie, mythical icons and an abundance of miscellaneous plastic wrappings -the QUEEN-OBJECT installation-dress serves as a symbol of overconsumption. It is distinguished as an artwork in which poetry and trash intersect. Beyond the superficially attractive high-society dress, attention is drawn to the current apparance-driven era that seems to dictate our lives. Through her QUEEN-OBJECT piece, artist Joann Côté, denounces the use of women as objects of consumption and promotion. She questions the sociological consequences of such practices by establishing a link between a quintessential luxury happening, over consumption, and the exploration of women as disposable and interchangeable commdities.
